President & CEO
Piedmont Candy Co.
Chris Reid was born and raised in Lexington, N.C. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1993.
Representing the second generation of family ownership, Reid — at the age of 16 — joined Piedmont Candy Co. and immediately became involved in every aspect of the business. Reid’s father, Doug, purchased the company from the Ebelein family in 1987. During the course of his career, he has served the company in many capacities, ranging from candy maker and wrapper operator to working in shipping and receiving as well as maintenance and just about everything in between.
Founded in 1890, Piedmont Candy Co. is the original manufacturer of pure sugar, soft puffed mint candies and currently produces more than 500,000 mints per hour. During the past 30 years — and under Reid’s leadership — the company has grown exponentially. It operates a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and distribution center totaling 200,000 sq. ft. while employing more than 100 workers.
Piedmont Candy has vastly broadened its market scope and is recognized at the #1 soft puffed mint producer in the United States, with half its candies packaged under the Red Bird brand and the remaining half under private label.
Reid played a huge role in the initial design, testing and perfection of the industry’s first continuous pure sugar cooking system in 2000. In 2008, prior to moving into the current facility, Reid significantly improved the system to produce 6,000 lbs. per hour as well as designed the first continuous curing system to soften the mints before they reach the wrapping department.
In early 2017, Reid assembled a sales team of candy industry veterans to help him lead the 127-year-old company into the future, thereby assuring its existence and prosperity for another 100 years.
Reid married Ashley Todd in 1994, whom he met at UNC. Together they have three children: Noah, Troy and Isabella.
